Nestled at 1,457 metres in the Kangra Valley, Dharamsala and McLeod Ganj offer something magical in every season — cherry blossoms in spring, misty monsoon waterfalls, golden autumn forests, and snowfall in winter. This month-by-month guide helps you plan the perfect visit.

Spring: March to May (Highly Recommended ✦)

Spring is arguably the best time to visit. Temperatures range from 10°C to 25°C, rhododendrons are in full bloom, and the skies are crystal clear with Dhauladhar range views. The Tibetan New Year (Losar) festival typically falls in February–March — a vibrant cultural highlight.

  • Temperature: 10°C – 25°C (pleasant throughout the day)
  • Crowds: Moderate — book accommodation in advance
  • Highlight: Losar festival, Triund trek season opens
  • Best for: Trekking, sightseeing, photography

Summer: June to August

June is hot in the plains but Dharamsala stays comfortable at 20–30°C. July–August brings the monsoon — heavy rains, lush green landscapes, and the spectacular Bhagsu Waterfall at full flow. Some mountain roads may close temporarily.

Monsoon Tip: Bhagsu Nag Waterfall and the Dharamsala Cricket Stadium are stunning during monsoon. Carry a raincoat and waterproof shoes.

Autumn: September to November (Best Overall ✦✦)

Post-monsoon, the valley transforms — skies are clear, roads are clean, and the Dhauladhar peaks are freshly snow-dusted. October is arguably the single best month — perfect weather, manageable crowds, and brilliant Dussehra celebrations in Kullu (a UNESCO Intangible Heritage event) nearby.

  • Temperature: 8°C – 22°C
  • Crowds: High in October — book 2 weeks ahead
  • Highlight: Kullu Dussehra, Triund at its most beautiful
  • Best for: Everything — trekking, culture, food, photography

Winter: December to February

Snowfall transforms Dharamsala into a winter wonderland. McLeod Ganj receives 2–3 snowfall events each winter. While some roads to higher areas close, the town remains accessible and surprisingly peaceful — perfect for those seeking solitude and the authentic local experience.

  • Temperature: 0°C – 10°C (snow likely in Jan–Feb)
  • Crowds: Low — best hotel deals of the year
  • Highlight: Snow at Triund base, New Year in McLeod Ganj
  • Best for: Budget travel, peace and quiet, snowfall experience
