Khajjiar is a tiny meadow with a massive reputation. Here's everything you need to know — how to reach it, what to do, where to stay, and why it's worth the detour.

In 1992, the Swiss Ambassador to India declared Khajjiar the '160th Switzerland in the world' — and planted a signboard that still stands today. This small, circular meadow at 2,000 metres, rimmed by deodar forests with a small lake at its heart, genuinely earns the comparison. Here's how to make the most of your visit.

How to Reach Khajjiar

Khajjiar is 24 km from Dalhousie and about 180 km from Dharamsala. The most convenient way is by private cab — the road is scenic but winding, making it unsuitable for solo bike rides unless experienced. From Dharamsala, a round trip covering Dalhousie and Khajjiar typically takes 2 days.

  • From Dharamsala: ~3.5 hours (180 km) by cab
  • From Dalhousie: 45 minutes (24 km) — easy half-day trip
  • From Chandigarh: ~5 hours (320 km)
  • Nearest airport: Gaggal (Kangra) — 185 km away

Best Time to Visit

  • April–June: Green meadow, pleasant 15–25°C, ideal for families
  • July–September: Monsoon — very green but muddy meadow
  • October–November: Autumn, clear views, crisp air
  • December–March: Snow-covered meadow — a winter wonderland

Snow Tip: For snow at Khajjiar, visit between December and February. The meadow is covered in 1–2 feet of snow and the deodar forest looks ethereal. Roads remain open but carry chains.

Top Things to Do

  • Horse riding around the meadow — ₹200–300 per round
  • Zorbing (rolling ball) — a popular attraction for kids and adults
  • Zip-lining across the meadow — ₹300–400
  • Visit Khajji Nag Temple — 12th century temple at the meadow's edge
  • Photography — the Switzerland signboard is a must-do
  • Paragliding (seasonal) — offered near the meadow in spring

Combine with Dalhousie & Chamba

Khajjiar works best as part of a 3-day Dalhousie–Khajjiar–Chamba circuit. Dalhousie offers colonial charm, Satdhara Falls, and Gandhi Chowk. Chamba (30 km from Dalhousie) has the ancient Lakshmi Narayan temple complex and the famous Chaugan ground — one of Himachal's most beautiful town centres.
