Booking a cab in Himachal Pradesh is fundamentally different from booking one in a city. Mountain roads demand experienced drivers, well-maintained vehicles, and a clear fare agreement. After years of operating in the hills, our team has compiled the 7 most important things every traveller should know.
1. Always Choose a Driver Who Knows the Hills
Hill driving requires specific skills — reading hairpin bends, managing brakes on long descents, and understanding when to pull over for passing vehicles. Always ask: 'How long have you been driving in HP?' A minimum of 3–5 years hill experience is essential for routes like Manali, Spiti, or Rohtang.
2. Insist on a Fixed Fare — Always
Never agree to a meter fare on hill routes. Meters don't account for gradient, road conditions, or driving difficulty. Always negotiate and confirm a fixed total fare before starting the journey. Get it in writing or via WhatsApp message for reference.
JaryalTravels Tip: All our fares are fixed and transparent — you see the exact price before booking. No last-minute additions for tolls (already included in most packages).
3. Check the Vehicle Before You Start
- Tyres — check for wear, especially for snow/monsoon routes
- Brakes — should feel responsive, not spongy
- Headlights — essential for tunnels and evening drives
- First aid kit — required by law, often missing
- Jack and spare tyre — non-negotiable on remote routes
4. Plan for Extra Time — Always
Google Maps distances in HP are dangerously misleading. A 100 km route that shows 2 hours can take 4 hours due to road quality, altitude, or traffic at passes. Add a 40–50% time buffer to every hill route estimate.
5. Book in Advance for Peak Season
May–June and October are Himachal's peak tourist months. Quality cabs with experienced drivers book up weeks in advance. Last-minute bookings often mean inexperienced drivers or poorly maintained vehicles at inflated prices.
6. Know the Seasonal Road Closures
- Rohtang Pass: Open June–November (subject to weather)
- Spiti via Rohtang: July–October only
- Jalori Pass (Kullu to Shimla): Closed Dec–March
- Bara Bhangal Trek roads: July–September only
7. Keep the Driver's Number Saved
Mobile network in many HP valleys is unreliable — BSNL works best in remote areas, but Airtel and Jio have improved significantly. Save your driver's number offline, share your live location with a family member, and carry a power bank.
